You'd need to set InDesign to use the Lab values prior to export, to ensure there is no color shift when Illustrator displays those same spot colors, or convert all spots to process prior to exporting a PDF. Adobe has mentioned that they fixed this. No guarantee on accuracy though as Illustrator historically used different Pantone values than InDesign!! Illustrator uses Lab values while InDesign uses CMYK values. Now I've never really had to do this, but when opening the PDF in Illustrator, I imagine it will see any spot colors in the PDF and add them to the swatches. That should prevent any color shift when exporting. You need to export with the exact same color profiles your document is set to in InDesign.

You need to use Bridge to sync all your color settings between apps (that way all apps are set to use SWOP, GRACoL, FOGRA.whatever flavor you're using), then you need to ensure your export is set to the PDF/X-4 standard (this will prevent flattening of the document, and preserve your layers, spot colors, etc.). Too much left in translation in how Illustrator interprets the PDF file.Ĭolor is another thing. PDF to AI is about as good as you're going to get.and I wouldn't want to go that route.
